Above: Dolf Lundgren of “Rocky IV”, Hollywood fame goes beyond acting after working out in South Africa with the Early Birds “You’ve got one helluva back kick,” Derrick Geyer (7th Dan) told Dolf. “Yeah, but I need to get faster with my punches,” he replied. Dolf is basically a Kyokushin man, but practices kick boxing when touring the world.

Reunion - 35 years later in Kurohime, Japan. Famous author, ecologist, adventurer and karate-ka C.W. Nicol meets with his “1963” friends. Nick asked each of us to demonstrate the progress made in our chosen art.
L to R: Host, Ikeda (Kendo 8th Dan), Stan Schmidt, C.W. “Nick” Nicol and Shunsuke Seto.

Left: Johan Roets (7th Dan) and Stan Schmidt share tech-niques and ideas with professional ballerinas way back in the 1970’s.

Right: Roberto Sant’Anna (5th Dan karate) from Sao Paula, Brazil with two students. “I am also a student of Brazilian Ju Jitsu and I integrate some of those grappling techni-ques in my karate teach-ing,” Sant’Anna said.

Right: Ken Wittstock (7th Dan) busy dealing with a gun attack. “As martial artists it is our responsibility to our students to research and study so that we can teach our students practical techniques relevant to the threats society may confront them with. In South Africa’s case we cannot ignore the threat of handguns.”

Left: Ed Dorey (7th Dan) practising Escrima (Phillipine fighting art) techniques in the South African bush. Since retiring from teaching karate, Ed now trains and studies various weapons; Jo, Bo, Nunchaku, Escrima and knife fighting. Knife fighting and throwing is his special passion. We had traditionally learnt “don’t try to block a knife.” But after training with Eddie, I see that nothing is impossible. He studies the AMOK system and tells me his teachers skills at blocking and countering knife attacks are utterly unbelievable.
Below: T. Chinen - Goju Ryu Master – in Stan Schmidt’s back yard, impressing upon him the significance of Okinawan conditioning drills. In this case, chishi – a weighted implement designed to strengthen the grip, wrist, forearm and shoulder areas. Arnold de Beer, South Africa’s 7th Dan Goju expert is a firm adherent and has developed some unique conditioning drills, which relate to enhancing one’s karate skills.
